Israel in Iran: Are we “Saving” Brown women again?!
Palestine. Lebanon. Yemen. Syria. And now Iran.
Israel and the US are at it again. Who’s next?!
This isn’t about what’s happening in the region right now. There’s ample news for that. This howl is about what’s being said about some of this violence… the idea that Israel bombing Iran is somehow… wait for it… “saving” Iranian women from the regime.
This kind of crap isn’t new. The West only seems to care about women’s rights in “those countries over there” just as it is about to bomb them. Bombing people into liberation — under the guise of women’s liberation — has not yet proven a successful tactic. So maybe — maybe?! — it’s not about “saving women” at all?!
And yet, it came as no surprise when, five minutes into Israel’s bombing of Iran one week ago, the claim surfaced that Israel is “saving” Iranian women. Indeed. I’ve decided not to send them a thank you note.
Listen, this idea that Western military interventions “liberate” women, that they’re doing us some big favor by dropping bombs and killing people? It’s a dangerous lie. It’s a form of femme-washing — a tactic that disguises real (and really self-interested) motives behind feminist messaging. This form of superficial activism is popular in the corporate world, but is gaining traction in military…
